County football championship about to get interesting

image preview

With Galway's 44th Connacht title secured, all focus switches to club action next weekend as the Claregalway Hotel Galway SFC resumes. There are no more second chances for the 18 sides that remain in contention for the Frank Fox Cup. In total, seven senior ties are down for decision including the eagerly awaited clash of Caltra and Moycullen, while county champions Killererin take on Cortoon Shamrocks in the weekend's other stand-out tie.

Twenty years, not out

Twenty years is a very long time in any individual’s journey through life. And 1989 seems like a different planet compared to some of the advances and negatives that we have experienced in the country over the past two decades.

Who will survive?

The Claregalway Hotel senior football championship really takes off this weekend with some clashes up for decision.

NUIG and Corofin expected to advance to the county final

image preview

Previewing any game involving NUIG is difficult because you don’t how many of their marquee players will or won’t be available. However, and this is a prediction of which I am confident, if they have all their top players this Sunday, they will be too strong for Cortoon Shamrocks.

Corofin and Caherlistrane must dance again

It is a tremendous achievement and they will take a lot of beating in the final. With forwards like Derek Savage, David Warde, Michael Martin, and Mickey Costello, they have the potential to hurt most defences. Likewise guys like Brian Roache and Donal O’Neill - who are both top quality corner backs - and David Finnegan, John Martin, and Brion Gilmore are not easy to get by.

Check out the Road to Croker tonight

There is a strong Galway flavour in RTE’s Road to Croker programme tonight at 8pm. The show looks back at Galway’s All-Ireland winning season in 1998 and has some clips from the championship campaign of that season.

Corofin can stop a happy ending to Cortoon’s fairytale

Giant-killers Cortoon Shamrocks are just one step from their first county title and a successful end to their fairytale championship when they face favourites Corofin in Sunday’s Claregalway Hotel Senior Football Championhip final at Pearse Stadium (1.30pm).

Corofin do just enough to collect Frank Fox

Thankfully there are very many funny and humorous people in Galway GAA circles. And sometimes that wit can pass down the gene pool to the younger generation.

Crafty Corofin recapture Frank Fox

County final day and all the baggage that comes with it. Corofin just know how to deal with the heavy load. It is why their recent history is laced with success and silverware. If Corofin want to win a county title they usually do regardless of the competitors’ list.
